ROGER BACON

     Roger Bacon also known as Doctor Mirabilis ( a wonderful teacher) is an English Franciscan philosopher and educational reformer who was a major medieval proponent of experimental science. He's known philosophy is Opus Majus.

     There's one philosopher named Roger Bacon. He was born(1220) in Illchester England and died(1292) in Oxford England. He studied Astronomy, Mathematics, Optics, Alchemy and languages. He was the first European to describe in detail the process of making gunpowder. His notable works are : Opus Majus , Compendium Philosophiae, Communia mathematica, Communia Naturalium and Opus Minus.

     "Opus Majus" was the greatest work of Roger Bacon. Opus Majus contains detailed treatments of mathematics, optics, alchemy, astronomy and the position and sizes of the celestial bodies. Opus Majus is divided into seven sections : "The four general causes of human ignorance " it considers the obstacles to real wisdom and truth. " The affinity of philosophy with Theology " concluding that Theology is the foundation of all Sciences, "On the usefulness of grammar " contains a study of biblical languages, "The usefulness of mathematics in physics" , "On the science of perspective" the study of optics including discussion of the physiology of eyesight , the anatomy of the eye and brain, considers light,distance , position and size , direct vision, reflected vision, and refraction, mirrors and lenses, "On experimental knowledge" it includes a review of alchemy and manufacture gunpowder and position and sizes of celestial bodies, and a " Philosophy of morality" considers moral philosophy and ethics.

      Roger Bacon philosophy helps us to apply or teaches us to apply mathematical method to all objects of study, whether in world or in church , because things in the world cannot be known without a knowledge of mathematics. Mathematics is very useful in the science also . They say mathematics is the key of the sciences, without it other sciences are unclear. His philosophy also reveals to us the motions of heavenly bodies. Opus Majus also teach us the moral philosophy, on how we live our lives . To live with righteousness is good but to live with wrongness is not. Opus Majus also helps us to analyze theological concepts, the revelation of God, being commited to God and also proving God's existence and his nature.

      Opus Majus can be still apply today. Its very useful because it helps us to the real wisdom and truth, and helps us to live our live in truth or to live our lives into righteousness. And it can helps us to know the existence of our God, our creator. Living with God in your life is very happy because when you live without him in your life you can do nothing. You can find the true meaning of happiness in God.
